Melter¶
The Melter is a Stage 6 machine that turns two items and a fluid, usually water, into a new fluid. Its main job is making Lubricant, which later Servo and frame recipes need. It also makes Electrolyte Solution in bulk for the Component Assembler, methane from algae for gas chemistry, lava, and Ender Slurry for the Vacuum Collapse Generator's Void Catalyst.
The Melter runs on FE and needs a Heat Core, a Crush Head, and a Fluid Pump installed. Like every RNGTech machine, each Melter you craft rolls its own rarity and affixes, and it can level up through Machine Mastery.
You can read a Melter from the outside. The two ingredients lie in the hopper on the lid, on the Crush Head: two toothed rolls in the head's material that turn while the Melter works, faster when a melt is shorter. Behind the bolted porthole, the product rises in the crucible during a melt while the ingredients sink and shrink. The chamber glows from dull red to yellow-white with its heat. The bar under the porthole reads that heat like the Process tab's bar, with a white mark at the recipe's melting point and a yellow mark at your setpoint, and turns red while the Melter runs too hot. Facing the front, the input tank is the glass column on the right and the output tank the one on the left. The Heat Core is the fins on both sides, the Fluid Pump stands in the back corner on the left, and an installed Servo is the motor beside the hopper. Missing Gear leaves bare shafts, rails, or a pad. The Battery Cell lies in the cradle in the back corner on the right, with a charge meter beside it. FE still enters on any side, but the cable port is drawn on the back.
Obtaining¶
Crafting¶
The Melter's recipe needs a calibrated conductive component of Stage 5 or higher with at least 70 stability. You make one by calibrating a Sparksteel Coil in the Resonance Calibrator.
Breaking¶
Mine a placed Melter with a pickaxe. It drops itself and keeps its rolled traits and Mastery progress. Items inside it, including installed Gear, drop next to it.
Usage¶
Melting¶
Fill the input tank with the recipe's fluid, put the two recipe items in the input slots, and supply FE. The two items can go in either slot, and a recipe that needs two of the same item takes both from one slot. Each melt uses 1,000 mB of fluid and puts 1,000 mB of the product into the output tank, except Ender Slurry from Collapse Residue, which makes 2,000 mB. Ender Slurry dissolves its items in Ammonia; every other default recipe uses water.
Some ingredients leave an item behind, such as the Glass Bottle from a
Honey Bottle. A leftover the Melter cannot use goes into an empty output container slot if it can hold the product, and otherwise into the inventory directly below the Melter, such as a hopper or chest, or onto the ground if there is none. It never blocks the input slots; see Automation.
The crucible heats up like the other heated machines and melts once it reaches the recipe's temperature; see Heat. Every default recipe needs at least 1,200 heat (methane needs 1,400, and Ender Slurry from Collapse Residue needs 1,600) and hardness level 6, so you need a hot enough Heat Core and a Titanium or better Crush Head. Unlike the Crusher, the Melter does not run recipes above its hardness at all.
Methane takes plain
Algae Biomass.
Dense Algae Biomass does not work in the Melter; burn it in a Bio Generator instead.
You can fill the input tank with buckets or other fluid containers in the Process tab, or pipe fluid in from the sides. To take fluid out, fill an empty container in the output container slot, or pull from the sides once a Fluid Pump is installed. If you put the wrong fluid in, use the purge buttons on the Process tab, or right-click the Melter with a
Purge Bucket to void up to 1,000 mB (sneak to purge the output tank). Purging the input tank resets the current melt.
Both tanks hold 4,000 mB to start. When the output tank is full, the Melter stops. A Nullite Servo instead voids the overflow so it keeps running.
Gear¶
The Gear tab has five slots:
- Heat Core (required): sets the Melter's temperature. Iron through Titanium Heat Cores fit.
- Crush Head (required): sets the Melter's hardness level.
- Fluid Pump (required): lets the Melter output fluid, and sets how fast it fills containers and pushes fluid out of the sides. Rolled Fluid Capacity affixes on the pump enlarge both tanks.
- Battery Cell (optional): adds portable FE storage. Without a cell, the Melter keeps only a small working buffer and runs more slowly. Incoming FE fills the Melter's own buffer first, then charges the cell, and melting draws from the buffer before the cell.
- Servo (optional): adds speed and control.
| Fluid Pump | Stage | Base transfer |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 125 mB/t | |
| 6 | 250 mB/t | |
| 7 | 500 mB/t | |
| 8 | 1,000 mB/t |
Automation¶
| Side | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Top | Inserts recipe items. Rejects items no Melter recipe uses, and never lets one ingredient fill the slot the other one needs; see Automation. |
| Bottom | Extracts filled output containers. Ingredient leftovers are pushed into the inventory below; see Automation. |
| Sides | Insert fluid containers and fill the input tank. With a Fluid Pump installed, sides also drain the output tank. |
| Any | Accepts FE, for example from a Universal Cable. |
Gear slots and the Refinement slot cannot be filled by automation.
Mastery and Ascendancies¶
Each completed melt earns Melter Mastery XP, and you spend the points on the shared Machine Mastery tree. The lava recipe earns none, and nothing is earned while the Melter is missing Gear, too cold, blocked by a full tank, or out of power. Melters choose between the Pressure Vessel and Twin Crucible ascendancies.
A melt whose whole output a Nullite Servo voids earns no XP. Changing your Mastery allocation restarts the current melt, but keeps items, tanks, and Gear.
The Melter has no Stability or Super Output, so those effects do nothing on it. Single Pass gives the Melter no speed, but still turns off Fluid Yield, Methane Trap, and Brine Loop. It gets nothing from the heat keystones Flash Annealing and Low Heat Specialist, and their max-heat caps do not apply to it, but Flash Annealing's Energy Usage penalty does. Fluid Yield is rounded down to whole millibuckets on each melt.
Melter recipes¶
The Melter uses its own recipe type, rngtech:melter. The Lubricant recipe accepts several base and additive items; hover a slot to see them cycle.
